FRANCESCO GIORGI

A minorite Franciscan monk and theologian devoted to study Hebrew, biblical exegesis, and Cabala. In his masterpiece, “De Harmonia Mundi Totius Cantica Tria”, he attempts an ambitious synthesis of the Cabalistic, Platonic, Pitagoric, and Biblical visions. Even though the book was condemned and burned by the inquisition, he was appointed superintendent to the renovation of the Church of San Francesco della Vigna by the Doge. In this role, he provided a famous set of guidelines where proportions based on multiple of three were used to infuse an element of divine harmony into the church architecture. Francesco Giorgi was an important public figure as well. He was candidate as Patriarch of Venice three times, and he was involved in the ecclesiastical negotiations over the divorce of Henry VIII.
